Over a period of a few years, the Head Horticulturalist at the Bishops Palace in Wells had noticed that the crown of their fantastic Black Walnut tree was looking less healthy and sparser as time passed.

Location: Bishops Palace & Gardens, Wells
Project Type: Tree health improvement & soil remediation

Works Completed: Soil de-compaction & biochar injection

Timescale: Multi-year assessment with 12-month post-treatment results
Outcome: Significant improvement in tree vitality and crown density

Previously we had carried out some soil de-compaction on an adjacent Beech tree using our air spade to de-compact the soil and add a well composted mulch to the root protection area of the tree. This showed good results over the next two or three years with the tree showing improved vitality and generally looking much healthier.

The Walnut would require a different approach though as historically the lawn underneath had been used for croquet for many years and so we needed to implement an approach which would protect the lawn.

Using a Vogt Biochar injecting system, we were able to de-compact the soil in the root protection area with almost no damage to the lawn.

Grids were marked out with an injection point every metre in all directions underneath the canopy and out beyond the drip line.

Using these markers, we injected Compressed air followed by an enriched biochar at depths between 400 and 600mm depending on the soil depth.

As you can clearly see in the photographs within just 12 months a significant difference in the tree’s vitality and overall health is apparent. For comparison you can also see another small Black Walnut, which we did not treat, next to the main tree which has not shown the same improvement.
