Wells Cathedral Holm Oak

Case Studies >> Wells Cathedral Holm Oak

Following a significant storm in December 2024 our assistance was requested by a long-term client to clear up a large Holm Oak which had failed at the plate and fallen across St Andrews Street in Wells.

Location: Wells Cathedral
Project Type: Emergency storm damage response & tree removal
Works Completed: Tree dismantling, waste removal & timber salvage
Timescale: Urgent response following December 2024 storm
Outcome: Safe removal of damaged trees and reuse of timber for commemorative projects

Other trees in the area had also been damaged by the storm and had fallen across the road in the local vicinity.  One of these trees was a large Cedar owned by Wells Cathedral that had Lost a large part of its crown where a poor branch union had failed in the high winds.

We were asked by the Cathedral if we were able to stack the branches and other debris that fallen across the road onto the green open space while they decided on the rest of the cleanup.

After inspections from various Local Arborculturalists, the decision was made that unfortunately the tree would be unable to be retained it would need to be removed as soon as possible.

As per our request from Wiil Cathedral, we formulated a plan and created a quotation to remove the tree to ground level and remove waste from site.

With support from Somerset County Councils highways team and Chevron traffic management company we were able to close the road with a full diversion in place the following week, while liaising with Local schools, businesses and residents.

With the road closed the team set about dismantling the cedar with support from Riley’s Cranes with the fantastic Matthew Webb operating the 50-ton crane in a spectacular fashion as he always does.

The Crane was the first part of the mechanical puzzle as we used 14-ton and 3-ton excavators to move timber and load the crane fed Chipper powered by the Unimog.

The larger pieces of timber were hauled away using our Timber trailer and tractor. The final piece of timber weighing just over 19 tons was loaded onto a low loader using the crane to be taken offsite.

We were asked to deliver the larger pieces of timber to land logic in digit where the timber was processed into usable sizes to construct commemorative furniture, among other items.

The team did a fantastic job with a tight timeframe in the sad removal of iconic local Tree.
